Abstract: Vietnam has been taking steps towards increasing its environmental regulations and introducing circular economy (CE) measures. The goal of moving towards a circular economy has been mentioned in the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, Decree No. 08/2022/ND-CP, and the National Action Plan on the Circular Economy by 2035. Applying the material flow analysis to the paper packaging industry has shown that it is an effective tool in quantifying material flows throughout the life cycle of paper packaging products. Material flow analysis also proves to be a useful method to identify opportunities for legal and policy interventions, as well as effective actions to address the environmental challenges of the paper packaging industry toward realizing circular economy goals. Based on the results of material flow analysis, policy recommendations for implementing the circular economy are proposed. Accordingly, it is necessary to focus on encouraging the reduction of raw material consumption, more efficient use of resources in the stages of raw material extraction, production, and consumption of packaging paper, increasing waste classification at source, encouraging the participation of stakeholders, including the informal sector, sharing information, and enhancing cooperation among all parties.</summary>

Authors: Nguyen, Thi Hong Huong; Luong, Thanh Tam
Abstract: The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) has long been at the forefront of medical research and treatment in hematology and blood transfusion. The institute expanded its facilities from 450 beds in 2017 to 935 beds in 2019. However, the increasing number of patients has placed considerable strain on hospital resources, particularly in managing solid waste and wastewater. NIHBT consumes an average of 373 - 407.75 m³/day of water, of which approximately 10% is allocated to wastewater treatment and cleaning activities. A wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 450 m³/day has been constructed, which generally meets treatment requirements. Nevertheless, environmental pollution incidents have occurred during its operation. The institute is licensed to generate 142,692 kg/year of hazardous waste, but in practice it produces about 214,366 kg of infectious waste and 3,750 kg of non infectious waste annually. Given these challenges, NIHBT is exploring effective waste management solutions and cost reduction measures, including the potential outsourcing of waste management activities to specialized service providers.</summary>

Abstract: This study evaluates the effect of polymer additives on the mechanical properties of high strength modified mortar (HPMM), aiming to use it as a protective layer for reinforced concrete in a marine environment. The research utilized a redispersible polymer powder (RDP) at contents ranging from 1% to 10% and a latex emulsion at a content of 5% by mass of cement, in mortar with a water to cement (w/c) ratio of 0.2. The experiments included evaluations of flowability, compressive strength, flexural strength, and corrosion resistance in a saltwater environment (Cl⁻ ions, 3.5% NaCl solution). The results showed that as the RDP content increased from 1% to 10%, flowability ranged from 11.0 to 16.0 cm, compressive strength varied from 74.67 MPa to 81.78 MPa, and flexural strength ranged from 17.68 MPa to 19.99 MPa, showing no clear trend. Bulk density gradually increased from 2066 kg/m³ to 2238 kg/m³. HPMM modified with RDP exhibited higher compressive and flexural strengths than that with latex. Notably, the polymer modified mortar layer demonstrated superior protective capabilities, significantly reducing rebar corrosion. This study suggests that polymer modified mortar is an effective and economical solution for protecting concrete marine structures, contributing to the extension of service life of coastal infrastructure in Vietnam.</summary>
