Authors: Nguyen, Thi Thu Trang; Ngo, Ngoc Hung; Tran, Anh Dung
Abstract: Though being extensively studied and discussed worldwide, 'student engagement’ defined as the time and the quality of effort students put into their learning and their involvement in educationally purposeful activities, has been scarcely explored in Vietnamese scholarly literature. To make a preliminary exploration of ‘Vietnamese student engagement’, this case study design research investigated how undergraduate students of Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh city engaged in their study and other educationally purposeful activities and how they perceived the level to which they are challenged and supported by their institution. For data collection, a survey with the participation of 500 students was employed.

Designing a reflection learning scale for nurse anesthetist students

Title: Designing a reflection learning scale for nurse anesthetist students
Authors: Nguyen, Hung Hoa; Ngo, Anh Tuan
Abstract: Reflection is the best competence for students to recognize themselves in learning environment, which helps student apply the tacit knowledge flexibly in a different circumstances. Reflection, therefore, helps learner get effective working by catching tacit knowledge, increase delectation in the cognition and apply their knowledge in different situation in practice. However, the competence of reflection is not easy for evaluating and improving during the learning process, especial in practice. This paper reports the construction and validation of Reflection in Learning Scale (RLS) to estimate the reflection’s ability in Vietnamese Students. The first RLS was mapped a fourteen items scale from literature review and pilot testing of 76 students to find out the construction and validation of RLS. In a series of study three separate factors analyses found the RLS comprised three separate factors, labelled Developing Tacit Knowledge (DTK) with 6 items, Applying for New Situation (ANS) with 3 items and Getting Critical Cognition (GCC) with 3 items. The validations of 3 factors in RLS were 0.83 (DTK), 0.67 (ANS) and 0.76 (GCC). The Likert Scale for RLS was determined with 2 indicators.

Optimization of nanosilica fabrication technology process and its application in rubber composite Material production

Title: Optimization of nanosilica fabrication technology process and its application in rubber composite Material production
Authors: Le, Minh Tai
Abstract: Rice husk (RH), an inexpensive waste material, was used to produce nanosilica that was then applied to fabricate composite with natural rubber. The optimization of process parameters on the weight of nanosilica using the Taguchi method was performed. Experimental specimens were then made to confirm optimum values for each process parameter. The results indicated that the weight of the optimal nanosilica was improved to 7.9 g with addition of NaOH concentration of 5M and stirring time of 5h from only 10 g of original rice husk. The structural properties of nanosilica were studied by scanning electron microscope. The results of mechanical tests exhibit improvements of tensile strength and elongation by 52.5% and 20.4%, respectively, at 6.0 pphr (part per hundred of rubber) nanosilica as compare to those of the pure polymer specimen. Morphologies of the fracture surface of resulting nanocomposites observed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) showed good adhesion between the filler and the resin.

A unified third-order shear deformation theory for static analysis of laminated composite beams

Title: A unified third-order shear deformation theory for static analysis of laminated composite beams
Authors: Bui, Xuan Bach; Ngo, Phi Hai; Nguyen, Trung Kien
Abstract: A unified higher-order shear deformation theory for static analysis of laminated composite beams is proposed in this paper. The theory is based on a higher-order shear deformation beam theory in which a general shear function is proposed. The characteristic equations are derived from Lagrange’s equations and then Ritz method is used to determine the stiffness matrix. As for static analysis, the potential kinetic energy in the Lagrange's equation is ignored. The shape functions for Ritz method approximation of displacement variables are selected to satisfy the boundaiy conditions. Numerical results are compared to those from previous works and are used to investigate the effects of fiber orientation, span-to-thickness ratio and boundary conditions on deflection and stresses of laminated composite beams.
