Abstract: | "The teaching method known as Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has gained popularity as a means of improving language proficiency through the use of meaningful communication and real-world tasks. This study investigates the perspectives and readiness of pre-service teachers in Can Tho University regarding TBLT. A mixed-methods approach has been used to provide comprehensive views into pre-service teachers' perceptions of and readiness for TBLT, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Twenty fourth-year English Language Teacher Education students in total participated in the survey, which provided quantitative information about their comprehension of TBLT concepts and readiness for application. In order to go more deeply into the factors impacting their provisioned choice of teaching methods and their confidence levels with TBLT, four student participants were chosen for the interview. The questionnaire, consisting of three parts, assessed the participants' understanding of TBLT concepts and their readiness for implementation. On the other hand, the interview explored the participants' confidence levels and factors influencing their future choice of teaching methods. Data analysis involves statistical techniques using SPSS for the questionnaire responses and thematic analysis for interview transcripts. Results show that CTU pre-service teachers are highly knowledgeable in the fundamental principles of TBLT and are aware of its advantages, such as fostering language fluency and enhancing meaningful interaction between teachers and students. They express confidence in implementing TBLT. However, practical issues including big class sizes and little time for preparation were noted as possible barriers to a successful adoption of the approach. The findings offer a foundation for modification necessary in teacher professional development and training programs, particularly those related to TBLT." |
