Abstract: Serving as significant factors in influencing individuals’ behaviors and preferences, introversion and extroversion have been popularly discussed concepts in scientific research and literature for many years. Despite the widespread recognition of "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking" by Susan Cain, especially in the field of personality psychology, there has been a lack of scientific exploration of its content. This study aimed to examine how introverts and extroverts are portrayed in the book and to identify typical characteristics associated with introverted individuals. Using discourse analysis, qualitative data related to introversion and extroversion was collected. The findings demonstrated distinct qualities attributed to introverts and extroverts. In particular, introverts and extroverts display opposite characteristics across various aspects, such as unique qualities, leadership, stimulation, and other personal facets. Extroverts are found to be more risk-taking and reward-sensitive, while introverts possess remarkable deep-thinking and problem-solving abilities and are more persistent. Additionally, the findings revealed certain prominent terms used to describe introverts’ attributes, including shy, quiet, introvert, timid, and cautious. This study provides valuable insights for personality studies, discourse analysis, and literary criticism, and lays the groundwork for future research to expand on these findings and explore other elements of “Quiet.
