Abstract: The severe shortage of landfills in major Japanese cities makes excavated soil in construction sites become an urgent problem to be solved. Liquefied stabilized soil (LSS) is an effective method of using excavated soil in construction works and has become popular in Japan. However, there have been no studies to evaluate the effect of the size of the excavation hole using LSS as back filling material on the surrounding ground when an earthquake occurs. This study analyzes the effect of the size of the excavation pit using back filling materials to the ground under the earthquake using the finite element method (FEM). Based on the analysis results, it is shown that a large excavation will have a significant reduction in acceleration and velocity than a smaller excavation when compared with the same type of back fill. In particular, when using LSS and LSS with fiber as back filling materials, it will significantly reduce the speed and acceleration of the surrounding ground compared to normal back filling soil.
