Abstract: Student exchange programs have become an essential component of international education, offering students opportunities to develop linguistic skills, intercultural competence, and personal growth. These programs offer a platform for students to experience new cultures, adapt to diverse learning environments, and expand their academic and social networks. This study explores the perceptions of English language students at the School of Foreign Languages, Can Tho University, regarding their experiences in the Vietnam-Thailand student exchange program. The research aims to investigate students’ perceptions of the exchange program, including the challenges they encountered, the perceived benefits of their participation, and their suggestions for further improvement. Understanding these perspectives is crucial in assessing the effectiveness of such programs and identifying areas for enhancement to improve future exchange experiences. A mixed-methods approach was employed to gain in-depth insights into students’ perceptions. Data collection involved a well-designed questionnaire comprising five-likert scale items and open-ended questions. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain deeper insights. A total of 33 participants who had taken part in the Vietnam-Thailand exchange program participated in the study, and three participants were later selected for semi-structured interviews based on their significant questionnaire responses. The findings indicate that students perceived the exchange program as a valuable experience that contributed significantly to their academic and personal development. Many participants reported improvements in their English communication skills, increased cultural awareness, and enhanced adaptability in cross-cultural environments. Furthermore, the program was noted to help them foster a sense of independence, self-confidence, and global-mindedness. Despite these benefits, several challenges were noted. Language barriers emerged as a primary difficulty, as many participants struggled to communicate effectively with Thai peers. Additionally, cultural differences, adaptation to a new learning environment, and financial constraints were mentioned as obstacles that influenced their overall experience. However, most students acknowledged that overcoming these difficulties helped them build resilience and acquire essential life skills. The study highlights the significance of student exchange programs in equipping students with essential skills for their academic and professional futures. The findings suggest that further support, such as pre-departure training and financial assistance, could enhance students’ experiences and ensure a smoother transition into the exchange environment. The research also contributes to a broader understanding of how international exchange programs shape students' learning journeys and intercultural competence. These insights provide useful recommendations for institutions looking to improve student mobility initiatives.
