Abstract: | The control and understanding of the natural vibration behavior of multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) buildings play a fundamental role in ensuring structural safety and performance, particularly in response to dynamic lateral loads such as wind and seismic actions. These loads can induce resonant vibrations that may compromise the structural integrity or serviceability of buildings if not properly accounted for during the design phase. Natural vibration characteristics—specifically the fundamental vibration frequency—are influenced by a variety of factors, including the total height of the structure, geometric configuration of the floor plan and elevation, the nature and layout of load-bearing elements, material stiffness, and the integrity of structural connections. In this study, the author conducts a comprehensive analysis of the natural vibration frequencies of multi-story RC buildings, with a particular focus on how these frequencies correlate with the overall stiffness of different structural systems. Emphasis is placed on the behavior of structures utilizing a combined frame-wall load-bearing system—a commonly adopted solution in high-rise construction due to its balance of flexibility and rigidity. By examining variations in stiffness and their corresponding impact on the fundamental vibration period, the paper offers insights into the design implications for engineers aiming to optimize structural performance under dynamic loading conditions. The research highlights the importance of accounting for stiffness in early design decisions and provides a comparative evaluation of various structural configurations, thereby contributing to more resilient and efficient design strategies for multi-story reinforced concrete buildings. |
