Abstract: Many kinds of wastewater contain rich organic content and their discharge flows into water sources can cause severe environmental pollution. Anaerobic digestion can be used to recover volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from high strength wastewater and organic waste. The recovery of VFAs presents a paradigm shift in waste management and resource utilization. By transforming organic waste into valuable bio-based products. VFAs offer a sustainable solution to global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion. This paper critically analyzed different VFA extraction methods including adsorption, solvent extraction, electrodialysis, membrane filtration, distillation, precipitation, gas stripping and pervaporation. It provides recommendations in selecting the most suitable technology via efficient extraction and practical applicability of the different techniques, simultaneously analyzing market trends and opportunities. This research opens a new, promising avenue for transforming waste into valuable resources.
