The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) has long been at the forefront of medical research and treatment in hematology and blood transfusion. The institute expanded its facilities from 450 beds in 2017 to 935 beds in 2019. However, the increasing number of patients has placed considerable strain on hospital resources, particularly in managing solid waste and wastewater. NIHBT consumes an average of 373 - 407.75 m³/day of water, of which approximately 10% is allocated to wastewater treatment and cleaning activities. A wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 450 m³/day has been constructed, which generally meets treatment requirements. Nevertheless, environmental pollution incidents have occurred during its operation. The institute is licensed to generate 142,692 kg/year of hazardous waste, but in practice it produces about 214,366 kg of infectious waste and 3,750 kg of non infectious waste annually. Given these challenges, NIHBT is exploring effective waste management solutions and cost reduction measures, including the potential outsourcing of waste management activities to specialized service providers.vi_VN
