Pancreatic cancer is one of the malignancies with the highest mortality rates, requiring early and accurate diagnosis for timely treatment planning. However, the manual segmentation of tumors on computed tomography (CT) images presents a major challenge due to the tumors’ small size, blurred boundaries, and low contrast. Although Deep Learning models have yielded significant advancements, they encounter a major barrier regarding the scarcity of expertly annotated medical data. The thesis "Pancreatic Tumor egmentation on CTImages using Deep Learning" was conducted to address these challenges by developing an automated pancreatic tumor segmentation system that combines training data flow optimization with the visualization of diagnostic results. Methodologically, the research proposes the use of a three-dimensional Attention U-Net neural network architecture. This structure integrates Attention Gates to direct the model’s focus toward the lesion area while suppressing noise from adjacent organs. To thoroughly overcome severe class imbalance, the Tversky Loss function is applied to heavily penalize missed tumors. The breakthrough of this method is the integration of an uncertainty-based Active Learning strategy. This mechanism enables the system to automatically screen and prioritize learning from the most informative data samples, thereby significantly reducing the cost and time required for expert annotation. Alongside the core algorithm, the project develops an application software featuring an advanced 3D visualization toolkit, assisting doctors in isolating organs and customizing the toggle of display layers. Experimental results on the benchmark Medical Segmentation Decathlon (MSD) Task 07 Pancreas dataset indicate that the system achieves promising performance, with a Dice similarity coefficient of 0.8133 for the pancreas class and 0.6297 for the tumor class. The Active Learning strategy also proves effective by helping the model approach optimal convergence without requiring the entire dataset. The primary contribution of this research lies not only in fine-tuning the deep learning architecture and optimizing data resources but also in successfully realizing an end-to-end diagnostic support system with high practical applicability. This solution bridges the gap between rigid AI algorithms and doctors’ clinical workflows, providing an intuitive three-dimensional perspective that serves as a powerful aid in assessing tumor invasion levels and planning pancreatic surgery.
