This thesis investigates how the choice of Structure-from-Motion (SfM) initialization affects novel-view synthesis quality in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) for UAV-based building reconstruction. Three SfM methods, COLMAP, VGGT, and MASt3R, are integrated into the same 3DGS pipeline and evaluated using PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS on test images excluded from optimization. On the Heritage3DMtl dataset comprising nine buildings, COLMAP achieves the best rendering quality in all available comparisons, with PSNR ranging from 17.44 to 27.89 dB, SSIM from 0.644 to 0.871, and LPIPS from 0.160 to 0.380. To identify which component of the initialization contributes more strongly to this difference, a 2 × 2 factorial experiment is conducted between COLMAP and VGGT on eight buildings by independently swapping the camera and coordinateframe information and the initial point cloud. Across all eight buildings, changing the camera and coordinate-frame information produces a larger measured effect than changing only the point cloud for PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS. An additional analysis between COLMAP and MASt3R shows the same ordering of effects on six buildings that satisfy the geometric conditions required for a valid experiment, and is therefore treated as conditional supporting evidence. The results show that the choice of SfM initialization has a clear influence on 3DGS rendering quality, while also highlighting the significant role of camera and coordinate-frame information alongside the initial point cloud. These conclusions are limited to the evaluated datasets and configurations and should not be interpreted as a universal ranking of SfM methods for all UAV scenes.
