Abstract: | Hữu Ngọc is a Vietnamese writer and journalist. He was Chief-editor of Vietnamese Studies, Director and Chief-editor of Thế Giới Publishers in the 1980s. He was born on December 22,1918 in Hà Nội during the colonial era (1886-1945) in a family of scholars from the province of Bắc Ninh. This man, who has just celebrated his 101st birthday, has been a signihcant hgure of the Vietnamese cultural scene for the past forty years. The scholar writes and speaks French, English as well as German, and can also read classical Chinese; he has around thirty-four books and several hundreds of articles to his credit. With more than a century of existence, this living memory of Việt Nam has had the chance to witness the major. stages of the national-communist Vietnamese State- building until the opening of the country to the common market and its appearance on the international stage in 1986. |
