Fin deformities of striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus are a major factor that downgrade hatcheries’ production and affects the production cost of farms in the Mekong delta. However, fin deformities in fishes are not well understood and many factors may be related with the development of these deformities in fishes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify possible factors that result in this malformation in seed production and nursery farms, which was conducted in Dong Thap and An Giang provinces by interviewing 56 households, using prepared questionnaires. In addition, samples of striped catfish that showed deformed morphology and normal individuals were collected and examined by digital camera and X-ray. In the present study, the results revealed that there are mainly seven potential factors causing this phenomenon on fish, including HCG hormone, seed production techniques, parental factors, chemicals used in nursing period, environmental and nutritional factors and bacteria and parasites infections all play a vital role leading to this deformity. The sum of these factors must have directly influenced the apparence of these deformities. It is necessary to control this situation to minimize the incidence of malformations that have economic impacts to farmers.vi_VN
