Abstract: | A study was conducted to investigate the effects of different salinities on growth performance of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) from two strains of broodstock (selected group – cultured in 5ppt water and control group – cultured in freshwater) in early stage of life. Fries striped catfish from two strains of broodstock were acclimated to saline condition and were randomly distributed in 5 salinity treatments including control (0), 5,10, 15 and 20ppt. After 76 days of culture, the results obtained demonstrated that the level salinities from 0 to 10ppt provided optimal conditions for both groups with survival rate over 70%. The survival rate of offspring from selected group were higher than that in freshwater group, especially in 20 ppt, the differences were significantly (p<0.05). The fish in 5 and 10ppt had high growth performance and low FCR,especially in selected group. The growth rate of fish was reduced corresponding with increasing level of salinity, but the fish from selected have better performance than control group. These results implied that the offspring of selected group seem to be better adapt with saline condition than that of freshwater group. |
