An analytical procedure using TLC, HPLC-PDA and LC-MS was established for detection of phenformin, metformin HCI, gliclazide, glibendamide illegally added to traditional herbal medicines and food supplements for diabetes mellitus. To prove the practical applicability of the proposed procedure, 10 samples of marketed traditional herbal remedies and functional foods (food supplements) claimed for diabetes mellitus were randomly collected and tested to detect the above-mentioned chemical hypoglycemic agents as illegal adulterants. Of these tested 10 samples, 4 were found to contain phenformin, and further, of these 4 samples, 2 contained metformin HCI along with phenformin.vi_VN
