Abstract: Antibiotic prescriptions for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) at Thu Dau Mot Medical Center were investigated to assure the appropriate use, improve the treatment effectiveness and reduce antibiotic abuse by retrospective study. The study involved only the prescriptions for outpatients aged over 18 years with URTIs In 2017. Three most frequently prescribed antibiotics were beta-lactam, macrolide and fluoroquinolone. For all URTIs, the antibiotic amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was most commonly prescribed. The appropriate antibiotic prescriptions just accounted for 83.53%; and of these, only 46.17% were reasonable in terms of dosage and dose interval. The rest prescriptions were wrong in dosage or dose interval or both. Thus, the antibiotic prescription for URTIs were partly unreasonable in terms of choice of antibiotics, dosage and dose interval. This raised the necessity of better supply and dissemination of the clinical and pharmacy information related to the use of antibiotics at the facility.
