Abstract: Zedoarondiol, known as a sesquiterpene lactone compound of anti-inflammatory activity and inhibitivity on platelet-derived growth factor-induced vascular smooth muscle cells, was extracted from Curcuma aromatica Salisb. Ten experiments were designed by Design-Expert 6.0.6 software to investigate the effects of three independent variables (extraction times, solvent/ material ratio, ethanol concentration) on two dependent variables (the yield of raw extracts and that of zedoarondiol). The cause-effect relations between the independent and dependent variables were investigated. All three independent variables (extraction times, solvent/material ratio and ethanol concentration) were found to affect both above-mentioned dependent variables. The extraction was optimized by BCPharSoft OPT software as: Solvent - ethanol 10%, times of extraction - 3; raho of material/solvent -1/9 (m/v). Zedoarondiol content was determined by the following validated HPLC method: Column - C18; Detector-258 nm; Injection sampe - 20 mL.
