Abstract: This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the choice of English teacher education (ETE) and motivation for learning of undergraduate ETE students - courses 45-48 at Can Tho University to find out factors that affect ETE students’ decision to select this major together with factors that affect students’ motivation in learning, and figure out the correlation between the rightness of students’ choice of ETE and their effort making at university. A questionnaire containing three main parts was employed to collect quantitative data. In total, there were 120 ETE students in courses 46 to 48, participated in the study. The results show that students’ choice of ETE was influenced by all 25 investigated factors, of which there were four outstandingly significant keys. Besides, an additional factor impacting students’ choice of ETE was discovered from a response to the open-ended part. In addition, the findings reveal that students’ learning motivation was affected by all 21 factors including both internal and external factors, in which internal factors were found more powerful. The study also figures out there was a positive and fairly strong correlation between the choice of ETE major and students’ motivation for their study. Lastly, possible suggestions and implications are addressed to contribute to career-oriented education at high schools, financial policymaking and college major management, and career orientation advising to high school students.
