Each culture can have different cultural norms and values and language system, which can cause distinctive manner of language use. Criticism is among typical examples to demonstrate that cultural distinction can have certain effects on the language in use. The current mixed-methods study employed a student questionnaire, and a student in-depth interview to explore how student perceive the similarities and differences between Vietnamese and American cultures of criticism. Findings suggested that there exist many distinctions between both cultures, notwithstanding two key similarities – tone and time for criticism. The results might have practical implications for EFL teaching and learning as well as translation.vi_VN
