Translating English Proper and Common nouns in a Literacy Text: A Case of Harry Potter Novel

Abstract

Nouns are divided into two categories: proper nouns and common nouns. Both serve as important parts in a sentence also called content words. Translating them as target language-natural as possible is also a difficult problem for the translator. The purpose of this study is based on the translation theory of Newmark (1988) to find out whether the translator prefers to keep the original meaning in the translation. Furthermore, this study also finds out which translation method by Newmark (1988) is the most used in translating common nouns and proper nouns in the first two books of Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets). Descriptive and comparative research methodologies were employed in this study. The outcomes demonstrate that the translation came out to be respected the original meaning and faithfully translated it.
