Abstract: This study explored the relationship between social media usage and English language learning among students at Can Tho University (CTU). The research aimed to understand how students utilize social media to enhance their English skills, the impact of such usage on their language acquisition, and the key factors that determine the effectiveness of social media in language learning. The study employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Questionnaires were distributed to 100 students to ascertain their social media usage patterns and perceived impact on their English language skills, while individual interviews were conducted with a smaller group of students to gain more in-depth insights. The results revealed that social media plays a significant role in language learning, with the type of content and frequency of usage being most critical. Despite some challenges, such as the need for higher proficiency levels to fully leverage the potential of social media and the potential for distractions, the students generally found social media to be a valuable tool for enhancing their English skills. The most common obstacles reported were difficulty understanding native speakers and slang, and the need for self-discipline to avoid distractions. The study concludes with some recommendations for integrating social media into English language teaching and learning strategies, based on the research findings. The insights gained are expected to contribute to improving the effectiveness of English language learning among Vietnamese students.
