Title: Differences between Vietnamese and American Personal Space in Communication: Vietnamese University Students' Perceptions

Abstract: This study was carried out for the following purposes (1) to assess the students' understanding about personal space in Vietnamese culture, (2) to assess the students’ understanding about personal space in American culture and (3) to assess students' understanding about the difference of personal space in the cultures of the two countries. There were 261 students, from many majors and different cohorts of Can Tho University participating in the survey. A five Likert scale questionnaire was used as the main tool to collect data which were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings show that (1) Students in general have an understanding of personal space and have appropriate manners when communicating, (2) Number of students have no understanding of the given statements about personal space in America is much higher than in Vietnam, this difference is mainly caused by cultural differences, and (3) There is still a part of students who have misconceptions and misunderstandings about personal space in terms of communication. The study gives a concrete look at students' understanding of personal space. It also provides practical solutions to improve the knowledge of personal space, thereby helping students have more appropriate manners when communicating.
