Abstract: | This qualitative study investigates the perceptions of Englishization among English-major students at the School of Foreign Languages of Can Tho University. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 participants to explore their attitudes towards the increasing use of English in various domains of Vietnamese society. The study reveals that the students have positive attitudes towards Englishization, as they perceive it as a means of improving their English language skills, enhancing their employability, and accessing global knowledge. However, some concerns were expressed about the potential negative effects of Englishization on Vietnamese language and culture and the social inequality it may cause. The findings suggest that exposure to English in the classroom and in daily life may influence perceptions of Englishization, and future studies could explore this relationship further. The implications of the study are discussed, highlighting the need for language policy makers to balance the promotion of English language proficiency with the preservation of Vietnamese languages and cultures. |
