Abstract: The analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the ethanol extracts (VCT) and n-buthanol fractions (VCB) from the roots of Polygala arillata Buch. - Ham. ex D. Don (“viễn chi hoa vàng’’ (VC) in vernacular name) were investigated in vivo. In the writhing test to develope peripheral effect in mice, VCT showed significant desirable activity at doses of 700, 1400 and 2800 mg/kg., while VCB did so at the dose of 320 mg/kg in mice. Both VCT at doses of 700 and 1400 mg/kg and VCB at doses of 80 and 160 mg/kg, each strongly reduced acute inflammation of the edema in the model of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema. Futhermore, VCT at 700 mg/kg and VCB at 160 mg/kg also displayed markably anti-chronic inflammation by reducing granuloma weight in the cotton pellet model in rats. These findings might serve as scientific evidence for the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of VC. and therefore, validate the use for inflammatory and pain conditions of VC In Vietnamese folk medicine.
