The effects of dietary supplement with sodium citrate and probiotic on bactetia density in gastrodigestive tract and growth performance of Asian swamp eel(Monopterus albus)

Abstract

This research was conducted to assess the effect of probiotics and Sodium citrate on total bacterial density, Vibrio spp. and the growth performance of swamp eels (Monopterus albus). Swamp eels (21.4 ± 0.41 cm; 7.9 ± 0.09 gram) were arranged in 250L plastic tanks with density of 40 eels/tank. The experiment was conducted with 4 treatments: first treatment with artificial feed (protein 40% Grobest) second: artificial feed was upplemented with sodium citrate (T2), third with probiotics (T3) and of probiotics mixed with sodium citrate (T4). High growth performance (10.9 g) was recorded in (T2) on the 30th day. Up to 30th day of experiment DWG and SGR were not significantly different for eels fed on additives including sodium citrate, probiotics and probiotics mixed with sodium citrate, (p>0.05). High density of bacterial observed in T4, with density of 90.0 x104 CFU/g and 56.3 x 104 CFU/g on 20th and on the 30th day respectively, while low bacterial density of 38.3 x 104 CFU/g was recorded in the control treatment on the 30th day. Highest density of Vibrio spp.was observed in control with 18.3 x 103 CFU/g. However, Vibrio density was not significantly different when compared among probiotics and sodium citrated added treatments, but the lowest density of Vibrio spp. observed in T4 with 0.4 x 103 CFU/g.The results of this research showed that both probiotics and the mixture of sodium citrate with robiotics improved growth and stimulated beneficial bacteria in gastro intestinal of M. albus.
